Geoff Keighley takes on E3 with physical Summer Game Fest in June 2023
Digital event shifts to hybrid model next year
Summer Game Fest will go head-to-head with E3 when both are held as physical events in June 2023.
The event's organiser and host Geoff Keighley made the announcement at the end of this year's Summer Game Fest, which was livestreamed today.
When listing off the remaining showcases expected in the coming days, as well as his future events Gamescom Opening Night Live in August and The Game Awards in December, Keighley announced next year's Summer Game Fest would be both digital and in-person "to bring the gaming community together."
No dates were given at the time of writing.
The announcement follows just days after ESA president and CEO Stan Pierre-Louis told The Washington Post that E3 would also be back as a physical and digital event in June 2023. Again, specific dates have not yet been given.
Summer Game Fest began in 2020, as a digital alternative to E3 after the spread of the coronavirus pandemic led to the long-running event's cancellation.
It followed Keighley stepping down as the annual host of E3's Coliseum event.
Last year, the two events ran side-by-side, encompassing a range of digital-only showcases and events, while this year Keighley has had free rein over the summer games announcements due to the ESA's decision to cancel E3 once more, both as an in-person and online-only event.
Tonight's Summer Game Fest featured almost 40 featured games, including new reveals like Flashback 2, Goat Simulator 3 and the rumoured remake of The Last of Us.
