Riot Games sues job scam ring
People posing as publishers have been staging application processes that ask for upfront payments for work equipment
League of Legends maker Riot Games sued scammers who impersonated the company, promising jobs as they stole money from some employment seekers, as reported by Polygon.
The publication says that a number of people have been victimized by a ring of individuals posing as various games studios.
Would-be applicants were put through a hiring process that included being asked to pay money up front for equipment like an iPad Pro with the promise that they could expense it afterwards.
Some applicants were also asked for banking information to set up direct deposit.
Riot Games said that it was made aware of the ongoing scams after victims notified the company months ago.
The publisher filed a lawsuit in November against the unnamed imposters for fraud and infringement.
"Tracking them down is the first step in holding them accountable," Riot lawyer Dan Nabel told Polygon.
It's currently unknown how many have been affected by the job scam so far.
