Unity acquires SpeedTree creator

Engine maker says it will fully integrate Interactive Data Visualization, Inc tools into Unity

Today Unity announced that it has acquired SpeedTree creator Interactive Data Visualization, Inc.

As a result of the acquisition, SpeedTree's technology will be fully integrated into Unity.

The software is a portfolio of foliage customization and environment development tools for games, architecture, and more.

SpeedTree has been used in the development of AAA games, films, and television programs. It has also won a scientific and technical academy award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

"We're excited to join with Unity as we continue to work directly with creators at every level, expanding our existing solutions and developing new technologies as we move forward into the next phase of real-time interactive content," said Interactive Data Visualization cofounder Chris King.

Interactive Data Visualization, Inc's company of ten will all remain on staff after the acquisition.

Unity said terms of the deal will not be disclosed.

Exciting to hear.

It would be fantastic if all SpeedTree tools and assets became a free part of Unity.

It would be lovely if it became easier to make lots of great quality trees right there in Unity, without having to pay for sets of quite expensive SpeedTree assets on the store. :)

This could be a real boon for Unity, as it's currently quite a challenge to make nice looking lush environments, and this is one step towards making that easier.
