Nintendo bringing new IP exclusively to mobile

Platform holder acquires five per cent stake in development partner Cygames

Nintendo has today announced a new IP exclusive to mobile and developed in partnership with Japanese studio Cygames.

Dragalia Lost, an all-new action RPG, has been co-developed by Nintendo and Cygames with the aim of "bringing to life the shared vision of a new gaming experience with worldwide appeal".

Scheduled for a release in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau this summer, Dragalia Lost could also see a US and European release at a later date.

As part of the deal, Nintendo will also acquire a five per cent stake in Cygames.

With Mario Kart Tour slated for release sometime in the next 12 months, this represents a change in tact for Nintendo following the mixed performance of its first-party properties releasing on mobile.

The success of Pokémon Go and Fire Emblem Heroes has been offset somewhat by the more tepid revenues of Super Mario Run and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp.

However, it's a clear indication that Nintendo is still fully open to the potential of mobile as a lucrative platform.
